5 New Habits To Take Up, Rather Than Give Up

Today is Ash Wednesday and this year, we’re encouraging you to take something up rather than give something up!
Ever tried to give up sweets and just ended up eating more chocolate? Given up video games and replaced it with Netflix? Giving something up can be hard, especially when it’s something you really enjoy. This year, how about trying to take something on? Here are 5 new habits you could take up…
1. Planning Your Week
hero’s founder Joe Gaunt recommends planning the week ahead when it comes to your health. This could be creating a meal plan, training plan, mental health activities or a bedtime routine to support a healthy sleep. Once you’ve got your plan in place, ask yourself what are the barriers? What simple things can you do to overcome them? Start by focusing on one area, like nutrition or sleep, and see how effective having a plan can be to support your health.
2. Give Half an Hour to Helping Someone Else
hero’s Head of Content and Delivery Sam says “Giving some of your time to others can be a great way to benefit your own wellbeing too. Whether it’s volunteering in the community, looking after a friend’s little one so that they can have some me time, or helping out a neighbour with some gardening, giving time to others can help improve your mental and physical health.”
3. Write Down 3 Things You’re Grateful For
You could start or end your day by writing down three things you’re grateful for – this could be as simple as:
Client Success Manager Alice started doing this a couple of weeks ago, “I send my three positive things to a friend every evening, and she sends hers back to me. We don’t have to talk about them (although we often do) and it’s been really useful as a way to focus on the positives of the day, ending the day with a positive mindset so that I can wind down and get a good night’s sleep. I also like scrolling back through the days, as it’s a nice reminder of all the positives.”
4. Walking Meetings
At hero we’re a big fan of walking meetings – find a couple of routes near your workplace to get out and explore. Down the laptops, grab a notebook and take a stroll – it’s great for boosting creativity whilst also supporting your mental, physical and social wellbeing – what’s not to love!
5. Self Development
When was the last time you did something just for you? How about dedicating even 10 minutes per day to something that will help you to develop – this could be reading about a topic you’re interested in, trying meditation, balancing in a yoga pose, doing a 10 minute HIIT workout, watching an educational video, the list goes on.
